ISO9001 “Quality Management Systems - Requirements” is the internationally accepted standard for quality assurance.

This standard has evolved over the past couple of decades primarily because of market pressures for better quality products and services.

It first began back in 1979 in the United Kingdom as BS5750 - the first in the public domain to supply guidance for internal quality management as well as external quality assurance and was very quickly accepted by manufacturers, suppliers and purchasers as the cornerstone for promoting and achieving national quality.

In the meantime America was working to an equivalent standard which they named the ANSI90 series and other countries (especially European at that time - early 1980’s) were also developing their own sets of standards.

Since then, the growing demand for assurance of quality before a contract is awarded has reinforced the already accepted understanding that quality products play an important role in securing new markets as well as retaining those markets that already exist.

Without doubt, in these days of competitive world markets, quality assurance has never been more relevant. No longer can suppliers rely on their reputation alone.

The drive towards “quality led production” now means that today’s major purchasers are not just expecting a quality product but are also demanding proof that a company is capable of producing quality products or providing quality services. The provision of this proof is normally in the form of an independent third party certification and this is possibly the single most important requirement for a manufacturer, company or supplier.

Up until a few years ago, however, there were no viable third party certification schemes available. But with an increased demand for quality assurance during all stages of the manufacturing processes, came the requirement for manufacturers to work to a recognised set of standards.

In 1981, the UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) formed a committee called FOCUS to examine areas where standardisation could benefit the competitiveness of British manufacturers and users of high technology - for instance local area network (LAN) standardisation.

Owning to the wider international interest concerning quality assurance, ISO then set up a study group during 1983 to produce an international set of standards that all countries could use.

How your business can benefit from ISO9001 Certification:-

(1) Being able to achieve a significant competitive edge over your rivals is the major benefit that ISO9001 Certification brings.

(2) Recent surveys reveal that 80% of businesses sought ISO9001 Certification because of their need to increase or maintain their market share.

(3) Of those who sought Certification - Profits increased - Costs lowered due to less wastage and re-works; Sales increased - fewer sales orders were lost; Exports increased - because it is internationally recognised; Management was deemed to be much more effective, due to less time being wasted; More opportunities were converted into sales because ISO9000 does open doors when only certified suppliers are invited to bid for tenders.

This eventually evolved into the first publication of the ISO9001 standard back in 1987.

It has been revised several times since then but is generally known as ISO9001.

Simply put:

(1) The standard is essentially a number of requirements (from controlling documents, purchasing control, design control, process control, controlling storage and delivery and many more) that have been agreed internationally that good quality assured organisations do to ensure a consistently high quality of product and service to its customers.

(2) It is the standard against which the Quality Management System of a business is evaluated.

(3) It can be applied to any company and has been worded to allow it to be adaptable.

(4) It is intended to to be used to demonstrate that a business can provide a consistent standard of quality.

Reducing pollution, minimising waste and efficient use of raw materials and energy can significantly increase the company’s efficiency and reduce costs.

Maintaining operations within legislation, the ISO14001 System will protect the company, its directors and employees from prosecution.

You should now be considering how ISO14001 impacts upon your organisation because:-

(1) Increasingly stringent legislation and regulation; shown by the new Government Environmental Policy which is adopting the concept of "the polluter pays".

(2) Consumer perception and the need to develop a greener society by adopting environmentally rich principles in all operational activities.

The Benefits and Opportunities of ISO14001 Certification are:-

(1) Improved efficiency and lower operating costs, and thus corporate image and reputation.

(2) Increased customer confidence.

(3) Decreased claims and liability and thus lower insurance costs.

ISO14000 "Environmental Management Systems" is a series of international standards that deal with environmental issues.

An environmental management system, as defined in ISO14001, is the part of an organisation's overall management system pertaining to the development, implementation, achievement, review, and maintenance of the organisation's environmental policy.

For many industries, environmental concerns are at the forefront with increased pressures being placed on organisations to show more than just initiative with regards to environmental issues.

Our services cover:-
(1) Preparation of Health and Safety Systems and integrate these into existing systems (i.e. covering ISO9001, ISO14001 and H&S needs all integrated together to minimise time and costs in maintaining three separate systems - a huge saving in maintenance costs). This would include your Safety Policy; Organisation and Responsibilities; Accident Reporting Procedure; Emergency Procedures; Control of any Dangerous Substances; Plant and Equipment Safety; Site Safety for Sub-Contractors; CDM (Construction, Design and Management regulation 1994); Office Safety etc.
(2) Health and Safety Audits.
(3) Health and Safety Advice and Consultancy.
(4) Health and Safety Training.
Many organisations are implementing an Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) as part of their risk management strategy to address changing legislation and to protect their workforce.

An OHSMS promotes a safe and healthy working environment.

All businesses need to take Health and Safety seriously, and we can help you to ensure that you meet your obligations.

Total Quality Management (TQM) is a comprehensive and structured approach to organisational management that seeks to improve the quality of products and services through ongoing refinements in response to continuous feedback.

TQM requirements may be defined separately for a particular organisation or may be in adherence to established standards, such as the International Organisation for Standardisation's ISO9000 series.

TQM can be applied to any type of organisation; it originated in the manufacturing sector and has since been adapted for use in almost every type of organisation imaginable, including schools, highway maintenance, hotel management, and churches. As a current focus of e-business, TQM is based on quality management from the customer's point of view.

TQM processes are divided into four sequential categories: plan, do, check, and act (the PDCA cycle). In the planning phase, people define the problem to be addressed, collect relevant data, and ascertain the problem's root cause; in the doing phase, people develop and implement a solution, and decide upon a measurement to gauge its effectiveness; in the checking phase, people confirm the results through before-and-after data comparison; in the acting phase, people document their results, inform others about process changes, and make recommendations for the problem to be addressed in the next PDCA cycle.

Bizcare promotes the TQM system approach wherever possible ensuring that Client's management systems cover all the functional areas of their business that are often not included via the conventional ISO9001 system. It is here where significant Client savings can be made by adopting the Bizcare BOSS and BOCS approach.

We also endeavour to make full use of flowcharts which are much more readily understood and quicker to read and follow by end users.

Bizcare have many years experience in developing ISO based management systems and have found over this time that many Clients prefer not to burden themselves doing internal audits as they would much prefer to get on with what they are good at - that is doing work or making things or whatever they have already been trained to do.

As a result, we now provide support services in internal as well as external (supplier) audits; often being appointed as their QAR (Quality Assurance Representative).

Many other Clients who do go-it-alone say they often struggle with having to have key staff tied down throughout the year doing internal audits.

As a consequence we developed (quite a few years back now) our Process Review tool which essentially removes the burden from key individuals doing the audits by handing the responsibility back to the process teams themselves - thus, removing the audit issue from being an overhead burden to an actual group based activity that adds value that they do within their normal weekly review meetings.

It’s been tried and tested and has been fully accepted by the major third party external auditor bodies - So if you are you tired of internal auditing - then why not review the Bizcare Process Review tools to get something back from your ISO investments.

(5) It is a common sense and practical method for improving procedures and many companies already cover most of the requirements of ISO9001 but have not documented them yet.

Essentially you need to "say what you do - in your quality policy manual; do what you say - in your procedure documents and prove you have done it - by way of internal audit".
